Random Acts of Kindness Week 2013 is February 11-17

We all know that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Whether it’s a stranger holding open a door or a friend treating you to a cup of coffee, an act of kindness can change your perspective and your mood.

February 11-17, 2013 is the official Random Acts of Kindness Week, and it’s a great time to encourage team building and camaraderie in the office. Celebrate the week (or month, or year!) of kindness with your team by equipping them with information and ideas for both in and out of the office.

Download RecogNation!Educate your team that Random Acts of Kindness Week is coming up, and you hope everyone will participate. Fuel the group with ideas from our free 75 Random Acts of Kindness eBook and the Baudville Pinterest board. Post the ideas on a public bulletin board or print them out and keep them in a bowl. Encourage teammates to select a kindness idea and do it! At your next team meeting, ask individuals to share their Random Acts of Kindness experience.

We spend a lot of our time at work, and sometimes it feels like we see our coworkers more than our families! Make your work environment friendly, welcoming, and safe for all your employees by creating a place where acts of kindness are the norm, not the exception. A great work environment attracts and retains great talent, making your organization stronger and more successful.

As your team begins to practice acts of kindness around the office, you’ll notice the effect kindness has on your culture and your team’s attitudes. You may even decide to promote acts of kindness year round!

Do you have a great Random Act of Kindness story? Tell us about it!

The Economics of Appreciation via Seinfeld

I love when I find examples of employee appreciation in pop culture! I can always count on scenes from “The Office”or Dilbert comic strips for comic relief. Both do an excellent job of making fun of some pretty outrageous appreciation blunders.

I recently learned about this scene from Seinfeld, and I’m certainly going to add it to my video library! In the clip, Jerry and Kramer both give Elaine birthday gifts, but one of them completely misses the mark. Can you guess who made the faux pas?

Today the Atlanta chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management posted a great blog post about this clip, the value of employee appreciation, and the lessons we can learn from Jerry’s slip-up. I recommend you visit their blog for the full article and to learn more about authentic appreciation!

Introducing…Five NEW Employee Appreciation Tools that Will Make Your Life So Much Easier!

If you’re a busy manager—and, let’s face it: the words busy and manager are practically inseparable—then you might not think you have time to show employee appreciation. But, considering that 64% of Americans leave their jobs because they don’t feel appreciated (you can read about this statistic and more in our Day-to-Day Recognition White Paper), taking that little bit of time upfront can save you eons down the road.

This all makes sense; but, NEWS FLASH: you’re still busy!

At Baudville, we get it. Which is why whenever we develop new employee appreciation products, we always ask ourselves this question first, “Is it easy to use?” If we can’t answer yes, then it gets chucked into the brilliant-but-useless idea graveyard. Yes, we’re ruthless; but we do it for you!

You’ll be happy to know that several products made it past the gauntlet and into the winners’ circle this round. Here they are:

In Good Company – Business Cards with a Twist. We definitely did all the legwork for you here; you just need to add your five seconds of hand work! Simply pick out a card that represents the person you want to recognize, fill in his or her name, and deliver. If you have a Chief Imagination Office, a Professional Game Changer, or VP of Positive Mojo on staff, then these are the perfect notes for you.

Fun Business Cards

Talking Praise – Fun Desktop Notes. With 3-D being the big buzz this year, we thought we’d create our own notes that stand up, stand out, and stand apart from all the other flat note cards out there. Choose from one of six designs, write a quick note on the back, fold to make the word bubble pop out, and leave it on your recipient’s desk. What a fun, colorful, surprise way to give your praise!

Talking Praise

Pop of Praise. When we talk to our customers, we commonly hear, “Don’t make me think!” Well, guess what? It is possible to give thoughtful employee appreciation without having to put hours of thought into it. Pop of Praise notes are perfect for quick, spur of the moment recognition—that happens in seconds! They’re available in three messaging themes and the notes inside are a random assortment of related messages. Just pull a note (it already says what you want to say), sign it, and stick it. What do you think of that?

Pop of Praise – Super Staff

I Rock Today Sticker Set. I just wrote about these in my High Five for Friday post; but since they are still as awesome today as they were last week, I am bringing them up again. For a modest 37¢ per sticker, you can give someone bragging rights for an entire day. That’s a little bit of pocket change and a couple of minutes with a Sharpie for a long lasting memento of your admiration.

I Rock Today Stickers

Memo Clip & Sticky Note Gift Set. These are sort of a hybrid tool: part gift, part handwritten note. And, the come in seven different themes! You can write a note of appreciation on one of the sticky notes, attach it to the clip, and present one to everyone on your team. They get a meaningful reminder of your appreciation; plus a memo clip and a pad of notes they can use at their desks every day.

Employee Appreciation on Good Friday

Was traffic a little light on your drive to work this morning? It was for me. It felt like one of those mornings when I question if I have my days mixed up. Perhaps, I think to myself, I am mistakenly driving to work on a Sunday. Oops!

However in West Michigan, students are on spring break and several businesses are closed for the Good Friday holiday. If you made the trip into work this morning, you may feel like you’re the only one in the universe who has to work today (although I have no idea how that feels - honestly). That kind of feeling can bring down morale and productivity for the day, but you can combat the disengagement with a small and sincere expression of employee appreciation.

Friends of mine are optometrists at a private practice here in Grand Rapids. When schools and businesses are closed, for example on Good Friday, they are swamped! Everyone wants to get their eye exam or order their new pair of glasses on their day off. As a result, the office staff has to work on a day that’s a holiday for many.

Today, the doctors in the office have planned a little employee appreciation to help the day go by smoothly. They’re bringing in a pizza lunch and giving each staff member a Thanks For All You Do Twist Top Tumbler. It’s all part of an effort to keep the staff feeling appreciated and motivated on a day when it can be tough to be at work.

The optometrist office really gets it. Their message of appreciation will be timely, sincere, and personal to their staff. I have a feeling the staff will love the pizza lunch and their new tumblers (they’re a big hit around Baudville!). More importantly, they’ll feel a renewed dedication and loyalty to their employer who recognizes their efforts on a tough day.

If you’re at work today, it may be a great opportunity to show a little extra employee appreciation to your team. It can be something as easy as a free ePraise card that says “thanks for being here today!” to dropping off a bag of their favorite Easter candy in the afternoon (we've been crazy about Cadbury Mini eggs lately!). Your sincere gesture of appreciation will be a great start to their weekend!

Happy Easter!

Promote Appreciation and Kindness During Random Acts of Kindness Week

There I was sitting at an intersection…just patiently waiting for the red light to turn green and then inspiration hit. I reached to the backseat to grab my padfolio to jot down this light bulb moment and just then something else hit me – the cacophony of a fellow driver’s horn. Now this was no courtesy toot – this was a six-second blast. I mean, I had time to look in the rearview mirror and see a normally kindly gentlemen with a look on his face like I had just insulted his grandmother. And for what? Five seconds of inconvenience?

You probably know that here at Baudville we try to promote frequent and sincere appreciation of our fellow team members as a way to boost camaraderie, engagement, and motivation in the workplace. But my little brush with a fellow human’s short fuse got me thinking perhaps I need to widen my focus a bit.

Well, it just so happens that Random Acts of Kindness Week is coming February 13-19, and for me the timing couldn’t be better. Perhaps our country at large is in need of a little love as well? Just think about all the people we interact with on a daily basis: the store clerks, letter carriers, public servants, fellow commuters, and complete strangers. What can we do to send some goodwill their way?

We can start by laying off the horn – figuratively and literally.

If you need ideas or free tools to join this mission, visit our Recognition Resource Center. There’s a new free download all about Random Acts of Kindness and a whole lot more there as well. Go ahead, give it a try!
