31. March 2014 09:00

Can you bring April Fool's Day into the office? Why not? Have some harmless fun with your team! Here are our top 10 ideas.

1. Add some salt in the morning coffee grounds

2. Wrap your co-worker's keyboard or phone with saran wrap

3. Place a mannequin head in the refrigerator

4. Wear a mask during your morning commute

5. Bring in an empty box of ice cream treats

6. Bring in props and do an impromptu group photo session

7. Replace all of your co-worker's framed photos with photos of your family

8. Use crepe paper to quarantine a co-worker's cubicle so they can't get in

9. Put bubble wrap down on the floor just inside the employee entrance

10. Have the team wear goofy sunglasses or wigs all day long

Have fun! Tell us what you did on Facebook and you could win a prize this week!

Fun at Work Day is January 31, 2014!

I know what you're thinking: who has time for such a silly holiday or time to stray from their full agenda? But maybe you should reconsider.

Some of the most successful companies in the U.S. maintain a healthy balance of work and fun. Take Google for example. Google has used the motto "work hard, play hard" to help build its empire. Their Mountain View location has a 7-acre sports complex, which includes a roller hockey rink, horseshoe pits, and bocce ball. They also have an on-site bowling alley and billiards tables to make sure that their employees never run out of fun activities. While not all companies have the means to provide Google's lavish amenities, keep in mind that it's their outlook that's the true perk. When interviewed by Mark Crowley of Fast Company, Karen May, VP of people development at Google said "It's less about the aspiration to be number one in the world, and more that we want our employees and future employees to love it here, because that's what's going to make us successful." I don't know about you, but taking advice from one of the most innovative companies in the world isn't the worst thing we could do.

Plus, you don't have to have a Google-sized budget to celebrate Fun at Work Day. Below are 5 low cost ways you can incorporate fun into your workplace.

Ping Pong 1. Ping-Pong (my personal favorite) - Put a ping-pong table in a break room and allow employees to play on lunch or breaks. You could even put on a company-wide Ping-Pong tournament to get everyone involved in the fun!

2. Start meetings on a humorous note - Bring an ice breaker game to your meetings or begin with some team trivia. Not only will this help everyone get to know each other, it will also lighten the mood before it's time to get to business.

3. Create a Humor Bulletin Board - This can be a place for your employees to share funny pictures of their children, ecards, funny facts, or other fun things they found online. When employees need a mental break, they can check out the humor board to put some pep back in their step!

4. Board Games - Place board games in the break room to promote some healthy competition!

5. Food - Everyone has to eat! I don't know about you, but I think food equals fun! Bring in lunch or sponsor a snack day once a month, week, or bi-weekly. It's a simple way to show some employee appreciation!

Embarrassing Office Moments: The Stuff You Just Can’t Make Up!

kimberlyHave you ever had an embarrassing moment at work?

While it may have been a moment of sheer humiliation, now it's something that you and your co-workers are able to laugh about and even share with new team members. It helps build those essential work connections and friendships that are building blocks to having fun at work!

I have to say that I've had my fair share of them, and they always seem to come up in conversation, even years later.

Oh, remember when Kim...

Wore that skirt one day and proceeded to walk from the bathroom to her desk (which is not just down the hall, by the way), with the back tucked in to her underwear?!

Yeah, that was me.

I got back to my desk and sat down, not even feeling any noticeable difference. Come on Kim.

So, a few minutes later, a guy that I work with came over and whispered, "Your skirt is tucked into your underwear." HORRIFIED. RED FACE. SWEATY.

Now, at the time, this guy and I were not close work buddies. But, over the past several years, we've definitely formed a friendship and a mutual trust. And, we always have a great story to laugh about together and with others.

Embrace those embarrassing moments, build friendships, and have fun!

Share your embarrassing moment with us on Facebook, we'd love to hear about it.

High 5 for Friday: Hooray for August!

It was the first full week of August and I’m high-fiving because it’s my favorite month of the year! August is always filled with things to be excited about! Here are 5 things to high-five about this week!

1. Lovin’ the Desk Dudes
Last month we showcased over 200 new products in our catalog, and we’re having a blast learning what our customer’s favorite new products are! One of our most popular new items is also my favorite too! It’s our awesome Desk Dudes! We even had a customer send us a picture of her Desk Dude in action, and we love it!

2. U.S Coast Guard Day
U.S. Coast Guard Day was last Sunday, and for my family, it’s an extra special day. My twin brother has been a member of the Coast Guard since 2009, and we’re so proud of him! They do amazing things to protect our country every day, and we owe them some serious gratitude! As with all military branches, the service men and women deserve a “thanks”  everyday, but it’s nice to have a special day dedicated just to them.
Thank You!
3.  Keeping cool
I mentioned that August is my favorite month of the year, but I’ll admit that even I can get tired of the hot and humid weather that usually come with it. (Even though we’ve been pretty lucky so far!) My trick to beating the heat is to have ice cold water with me at all times, and our new our new Twist Top Tumblers and water bottles are perfect for the job! They are super-stylish and feature lots of bright colors and some of our most popular themes

4. Restaurant Week
Restaurant Week Grand Rapids kicks off this Sunday and goes through the following week. As a local food enthusiast, I look forward to this event every year. It’s so much fun to taste unique dishes from some of the city’s top chefs and enjoy the downtown atmosphere at its finest! What’s not to love about delicious food specials for an entire week?

5. Soak up the sunshine
In my books, August is the best month to visit the beautiful beaches of West Michigan. We’re so lucky to have Lake Michigan so close, and tons of beautiful beaches to choose from. And our new Value Coolers make trips to the beach even better! They’re the perfect accessory to store beach snacks or a 6-pack of cans in! I know where I’ll be spending my weekends, and I hope all of you get a chance to hit the beaches, too!
