A while back, I mentioned in a National Volunteer Week blog post that many of us at Baudville have signed up for the 5/3 Riverbank Run. I was one of those people, and this year I really decided to challenge myself to run my longest race thus far: the 25K. The 5/3 Riverbank Run is host to the country's largest 25K, and it is right here in Grand Rapids, so I just had to sign up!
Now, I would be lying if I said I signed up just so I could be a part of the largest 25K road race in the U.S.; I'm not that trendy! I really just wanted to challenge myself physically and mentally. I have been running for about 3 years but I am not one of those people that loves running by any means, I mainly run just to stay in shape. Before this, I had never run more than a 10K (6.2 miles), so I had to get serious about training in order to be prepared for this race. There have been many bumps along the way in my training process – including shin splints, a stress fracture, and a whole lot of having to get out of my own way mentally.
There have been many times when I have thought to myself, "I can't do this", or, "I need to change my race to the 10K." However, after completing my first long training run, all of those thoughts went out the window. It was so rewarding: the afternoon of my training run, I had planned to run 10 miles and ran 11 because my body wasn't ready to stop at 10. It felt incredible to know that my hard work was paying off! So, if you are having trouble meeting your health and wellness goals or feeling discouraged, I am here to tell you first hand to shake your negative thoughts and power through. You will see results; don't give up!
If that's not motivation enough, to add to the excitement of the race and to give an extra incentive, Baudville partnered with the Conductive Learning Center for the Riverbank Run. CLC is a foundation that helps children with motor disabilities, such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida, to gain independence. Baudville paid all of the entrance fees for employees who wanted to run the race for Team Baudville on behalf of Team CLC. Team Baudville has also collectively raised $3,731 for Team CLC thus far, and that number continues to grow! The money raised will ensure that more children are able experience the life-changing Conductive Education program.
I am so excited to run on behalf of this company and on behalf of a great local charity! May 10th is coming up quickly and I am ready to lace up and put all of my hard work to the test!
